What is a POS cash drawer?
A POS cash drawer is a lockable till that opens automatically when a cash sale completes. It connects to your receipt printer rather than the terminal, so it stays shut except when a transaction requires it — which is both a security control and an audit trail.
Why cash handling still matters
Card payments dominate, but few Australian venues are genuinely cashless. Cash still arrives from older customers, from small purchases, from tips, and whenever a payment network has an outage. A venue with no cash process stops trading when the connection drops.
A connected drawer also ties cash movements to transactions, so you can see which sale opened the till and when. That link is what makes end-of-day reconciliation possible.
Choosing a POS cash drawer
Note and coin capacity. Count the denominations you actually handle. An Australian float typically needs five note slots and eight coin slots.
Build quality. A drawer opens and closes thousands of times a year. Steel construction is the difference between a component that lasts and one you replace.
Connection. Most drawers connect by RJ12 to the receipt printer, so confirm your printer has the port.
Footprint. Measure the counter, including the space the drawer needs to open fully.
How the cash drawer connects
The drawer plugs into the receipt printer with the supplied RJ12 cable. When a cash sale completes, the POS signals the printer, which fires the 24V solenoid and releases the drawer. There is no separate power supply and no direct connection to the terminal.
This is why printer and drawer are best bought together: a mismatched pair is the most common reason a new drawer will not open.
