What is a POS barcode scanner?
A POS barcode scanner reads the barcode on a product and enters it at the till instantly, replacing manual keying. It removes the two costs of typing: the time it takes and the errors it introduces. Pratham POS scanners read both traditional 1D barcodes and 2D codes, including codes displayed on a customer’s phone screen.
Where a barcode scanner pays for itself
At the till. Scanning is faster than keying and does not mis-price. One wrong digit on a busy Saturday becomes a refund, an apology and a stock discrepancy.
At stocktake. Counting by scanner turns a manual count into a walk-through.
On delivery. Scanning goods in keeps stock accurate from the moment it arrives rather than from the next count.
For phone codes. Loyalty codes, vouchers and digital tickets are 2D codes on a screen, and a 1D-only scanner cannot read them.
Choosing a barcode scanner
1D or 2D? 1D handles standard retail barcodes. 2D also reads QR codes and codes shown on phone screens. If you run promotions or loyalty, you need 2D.
Handheld or hands-free? A desktop omni-directional scanner reads items passed over it, which suits a fixed counter. A handheld suits bulky items and shelf work.
Scanning volume. High-throughput retail justifies faster decoding; a salon scanning occasional retail products does not.
